1. Preparation

  1. Clean yourself and the room by disinfecting all surfaces and closing the doors, windows, and air conditioning.
  2. Put on gloves, disinfect your hands, the kit, your liquid culture or spore syringe, and finally the injection port on the kit with a 70% alcohol solution.

2. Inoculation

Inoculate 5ml of liquid culture by injecting the injection port with the sterile needle of your syringe.

3. Incubation

Place the kit in a dark, clean space with a temperature between 20-27°C (68-81°F). You'll usually need to wait two weeks before seeing growth, but this may vary depending on the species you're growing. Be patient!

4. Break and Shake

Once the mycelium has colonized 20-30% of the substrate, carefully (without damaging the bag) pinch the bag from the front and back just below the filter and gently pull it from the sides to allow air to enter through the filter. This will give you the necessary space for mixing.
Gently press down on the substrate, breaking it up, and remix it, redistributing the colonized portions. Firm the substrate back into its original shape, smoothing the surface thoroughly. Let it rest until fully colonized.

5. Fruiting

  • Once the kit is fully colonized, it's time to start fruiting. The procedures will vary depending on the species you're growing.
  • Provide the right conditions. Depending on the growing parameters of the species you want to grow, place the kit in a cooler area of the house.

a. Fruition from Above

  1. Place the rubber band about two fingers below the surface of the substrate. Cut the top of the bag 5 cm from the substrate surface. Place the kit inside the mini grow tent. Close the tent by folding the opening a couple of times and securing it with the two paper clips.
  2. You'll need to monitor them, but generally, misting isn't necessary. If you never see condensation or droplets forming on the plastic, you can open the lid and spray water on the inside of the mini grow tent.

b. Fruiting from the Side

  1. Make a small cut near the seal of the envelope. Squeeze out the air from the envelope and fold all the excess plastic underneath the kit so that all sides of the kit are in direct contact with the plastic. Then make an X-shaped cut along one side.
  2. Spray regularly 2/3 times a day, keeping the cut side of the kit moist, without overdoing it.
